i remember reading that the wwe & hogan were working on a long-term contract that would allow hulk to come back whenever he wants. is there any news on this?

20 years from what I remember. I think 5 of those years were talent/active roster but I'm not sure.

Yes it's the 20-year "Legends" contract. Five years as regular talent, and 15 years for special appearances, merchandice, etc.
